Voith retarder
Experienced petrolheads appreciate the gentle power of a Voith retarder. Using the Voith retarder, 80% of all braking can be performed without the wear and tear of brakes. Some professionals can perform 90% of braking and more with the retarder.
These instruction will help you and all other novices, so you can appreciate the benefits of Voith retarders even more. We describe the retarder’s method of operation and its correct usage.
Voith retarders offer high driving comfort and are easily controlled, regardless if driving down a slope, during adjustment braking, or in city traffic – they always increase safety and cost-effectiveness of a vehicle

1 WHY VOITH RETARDER?

Because even the best service brakes have limits!
 
1a Voith retarders are cost-effective permanent brakes that keep the temperature level of service brakes low. Thereby, service brakes can always operate at their full effectiveness and provide additional safety for emergency situations.
 
1b Voith retarders are extremely powerful brakes that can safely stop even heavy vehicles. Braking power of a retarder is about twice the engine power of the vehicle.


2 FUNCTION AND INSTALLATION

The rotor driven by the Cardan shaft accelerates the movement of the oil, which is slowed by the stator.

Due to spinning oil, the rotor rotation is slowed down, thus reducing vehicle speed. The heat produced by this process is dissipated via the vehicle’s cooling system.

3a RETARDER OPERATION

The retarder can be easily and comfortably operated by a lever next to the steering wheel or by a pedal.

In the current generation of vehicles, the retarder is usually installed in the brake management.

The retarder activates through the vehicle computer, in response to driving and operating conditions.

3b RETARDER ACTIVATION

Retarder control is adjusted to vehicle specifications. The lever must be moved gradually!!

3c RETARDER ACTIVATION – FUNCTION V = CONSTANT

Speed is adjusted with the retarder.

Activation V = constant at the desired speed causes the retarder to stay in the highest braking torque range at the constant speed of vehicle.

Deactivation of function V = constant, deletes the speed entry from memory.

4 CORRECT USE OF RETARDER

Retarder’s capabilities are fully employed if you abide by the following:

DURING BRAKING WITH THE RETARDER, SHIFT DOWN A GEAR!
Thereby, you achieve the following:
  • increased operation of the water pump
  • increased fan rpm
  • increased crank shaft rpm
  • increased braking power of the retarder

Fuel consumption is not increased due to higher rpm, as the injection device is not supplying fuel to the engine at that time.

ATTENTION: THIS APPLIES TO ALL RETARDER TYPES THAT USE WATER OR OIL AS THE OPERATING MEDIUM!!

5 DRIVING SITUATIONS

Braking while driving down a slope

  • shift into lower gear, thus achieving higher engine rpm
  • adjust driving speed down a slope with the retarder
  • via the retarder, select v = const. or braking level
If the vehicle accelerates despite v = const., you must use the service brake.
 
Shifting into the next braking level DOES NOT increase the braking effect of the retarder!

Reduce the speed with the retarder and stop the vehicle with the service brake.

6 DRIVING DURING DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS

During unfavourable driving conditions, the retarder has to be activated carefully and in stages.

DO NOT activate the retarder during hazardous situations. This safety instruction is especially important with vehicles without ABS.

When ABS activates, retarder automatically deactivates. After ABS deactivates, the retarder is once again functional.
